Amend Wall Street is an extension of the MoveToAmend movement that is sweeping across America right now.
Everyone keeps asking the Occupy Wall Street folks, "What are your goals?" We see Amend Wall Street as one of the answers.
Let's start with Wall Street itself. To be clear, Wall Street. is just part of the problem; we'll get on with that later. Wall Street is essentially about money, and the control of money. And we all know money is power. We also know that money/power recently brought us one of the most calamitous periods in our history.
There are many voices out there now, speaking truth to this Power. We want to help you connect to them and other voices in this movement. Amend Wall Street has been created as a resource for the people to investigate, for themselves, the facts behind our recent financial meltdown and other historic collapses.
The connection between our election, law making & judicial systems & Wall Street's political power is obvious, particularly after the United States Supreme Court's disastrous Citizens United decision.
Americans are watching now as a tidal wave of special interest money overwhelms our upcoming election. Our system of government is going off the rails because of the influence of these special interests. Everyone is talking about it, and anyone who cares about our future is very concerned.
So, what to do?
First, we need to recognize that we have a problem, then begin to educate ourselves and start conversing with one another about finding a solution. After Citizens United and a series of other Supreme Court pro-corporate-power decisions, including the Election of 2000, we know that justice is unlikely to be achieved from that body. In fact, the opposite is more likely to occur. Our Supreme Court has become the judicial arm of the powerful elite in this country.
There is only one way to overrule the Supreme Court, and that is through our United States Constitution. And so we come to the subject of a Constitutional Amendment. Consider the first 10 Amendments, our Bill Of Rights; free speech, right to assemble, equal protection...We are suggesting that Americans need another Amendment that will make the Bill Of Rights more complete. This new Amendment would establish our right as US Citizens to fair elections, to lawmaking that is transparent & free of special interest influence, and to an honest judiciary. We are not proposing the wording of such an Amendment, we are simply pointing out the necessity of one.
Creating and passing a Constitutional Amendment is a long, complicated task. It should be. A very large plurality of Americans will have to be in agreement before it can be enacted. But, there has never been a moment in our history like this one; when we are all starting to recognize the same problem at the same time. A huge majority of Americans believe that Congress is dysfunctional.
Amend Wall Street is here to help direct the conversation by pointing people to information, activities, and contacts.
So, let's begin.
